Golf Putting Tricks

I’ve always believed that a good putt can make or break your round of golf. It’s a pivotal moment each time you’re on the green, lining up to tip the scales in favor of a stellar scorecard. In this article, you’ll learn tricks that can transform your putting from good to great.

Putting holds immense power in determining the outcome of your game. Golfers, from casual weekend players to seasoned professionals, often echo the sentiment that ‘putting is where the game is won or lost’. With about 40% of golf shots taken on the green, your proficiency in putting is not just helpful; it’s crucial.

So, I’m going to share techniques I’ve honed on the greens. You’ll discover how subtle changes in your stance or the way you grip the putter can yield remarkable results. With every stroke saved, you’re inching closer to shaving those extra points off your handicap.

To set the ball rolling (pun intended), let’s look at where every successful putt starts. Believe it or not, it’s not your hands or even the putter—it’s your stance. A solid stance serves as the bedrock for consistent, accurate putting. In the next section, ‘Perfecting Your Stance: The Foundation of Expert Putting,’ we’ll delve into how a stable and properly aligned posture can lead to confident, control strokes on the greens.

Perfecting Your Stance: The Foundation of Expert Putting

Your stance is the anchor for your entire putting stroke; it sets the stage for the ball’s journey to the hole. Striking a balance between comfort and control is essential, and often, even seasoned golfers need to refine their stance to remain consistent.

Visual alignment is crucial. Your eyes serve as a guide, enabling you to line up your putter face accurately with the target. With your eyes directly over the ball, you’ll foster better judgment of distances and maintain a straighter stroke. Body alignment follows suit, with your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line, setting the pretext for a flawless execution.

A pre-putt routine is just as important as the stance itself. Repeating this sequence before every putt offers familiarity and predictability. This routine might include a couple of practice strokes, a deep breath to calm the nerves, and a final alignment check before settling into the stance.

Last but not least, let’s talk about grip. There’s a delicate balance here. Your grip should be firm enough to maintain control but relaxed enough to prevent tension from throwing off the stroke. Experiment with different grip styles and pressures in your practice sessions to find what works best for you.

The Mental Game: Cultivating Focus and Confidence on the Green

Have you ever noticed how often the pros talk about the importance of mental toughness in golf? Your thoughts, your focus, and your confidence play huge roles in how well you putt. It’s not just about your stance and the swing; it’s how you manage the game in your head that often leads to success.

Increasing concentration during your putts is a skill you can develop. Start by creating a quiet space in your mind. This might mean taking deep breaths before a putt or having a particular phrase you repeat to clear your thoughts. Visualizing the ball dropping into the hole can also help cement your focus.

Building a positive mindset is essential, especially after a missed putt. Rather than dwelling on mistakes, quickly acknowledge them, learn, and then let them go. Affirmations can be useful here. A simple, ‘I’ve got this,’ can mean the difference between dwelling on the past and putting with confidence.

Nerves are normal. Everyone feels them, even the top professionals. But you can develop a routine that helps you stay calm. This could mean a specific number of practice swings, a particular breathing pattern, or even a set walking pace as you approach the ball. The routine should help you focus and give you a sense of control.

Reading the green is crucial. Take your time to evaluate the slope and speed. Is there a subtle incline you need to account for? What about the grass condition? These factors can change the path of your putt dramatically, so take them into consideration every time.

Remember, consistency in your mental approach leads to better putting. Work on these techniques regularly and your game will THANK YOU.

Elevate Your Game: Mastering Precision on the Green

You’ve learned about the physical and mental aspects of putting. Now, I’ll share some smart drills to help you fine-tune those putting skills. This final section connects practice to performance.

Consistency is KEY. Regular, focused practice sessions are essential. Embrace drills that challenge various aspects of your putting. Change scenarios often to mimic actual playing conditions.

I recommend starting with the ‘Circle Drill’. Place balls in a circle around the hole at a comfortable distance and try to sink them all in succession. It’s great for building both accuracy and confidence.

Don’t overlook the value of technology. Gadgets like laser guides and putting mats can offer immediate feedback and help you stay on track during indoor practice sessions. Use these tools to your advantage.

Documenting your progress is crucial. Keep a log of your putting exercises and celebrate your successes. The feeling of ticking off those milestones? Priceless. It fuels your desire to keep improving.

Remember, the path to becoming a putting expert is one of persistence and dedication. Stick to your routine, remain patient, and your efforts will pay off on the green. I believe in you – now prove to yourself that you can do it.

  2. Hey I totally agree that putting will make or break your game. If you’re keeping score putting can make you lose in a hurry. Golf is one of those things where every thing counts. And a small mistake is very costly. So like you say it’s technique but there’s also the mental game part of it. I think Jack Nicklaus said that he always visualized his shot before making it.

    • Hi Jake,

Absolutely, putting is crucial and can really affect your score. Golf is indeed a game where every detail matters, and even small mistakes can be costly. You’re right about the mental aspect being just as important as the technique. Jack Nicklaus’ approach of visualizing the shot beforehand is a great strategy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  3. Wow, Mercy, what an insightful read! I couldn’t agree more with your emphasis on the pivotal role putting plays in a golfer’s game.

I found your breakdown of stance, mental strategies, and precision drills incredibly helpful. As I’m looking to enhance my putting game, I have a few questions. In your experience, what’s the most common mistake golfers make in refining their stance for putting, and how can it be rectified? Also, you mentioned the importance of creating a quiet space in one’s mind before a putt. Do you have any specific techniques or practices you recommend for achieving this mental focus?

I’m also intrigued by the ‘Circle Drill’ you mentioned. How often would you suggest incorporating this drill into a practice routine, and are there any variations to keep it challenging?

Thank you for sharing your expertise, and I look forward to hearing your insights!

    • Hi Adnan,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you found the article helpful.

      For your questions:

      1. The most common mistake in stance is not aligning properly. To fix this, ensure your feet, hips, and shoulders are parallel to the target line.

      2. For mental focus, I recommend deep breathing and visualization techniques before each putt.

      3. The ‘Circle Drill’ should be practiced regularly. Start with 10 minutes per session and gradually increase. You can vary it by changing the distance or the number of balls.

      Thank you for reaching out!

  4. This is a wonderful article based on your experience and the received wisdom-a nice blend. I’ve been playing for a few years but found my stance didn’t improve, even with coaching. So, instead, I had some sessions with an Alexander teacher (F.M.ALexander: Body Reeducation), and within 3 weeks, I was using my spine and hip joints in a very different way. I had also changed my club sizes. I recommend Alexander for golfers.
